One could say that I am an accidental sculptor. It came about innocently, while pushing a shopping cart through an art supply store. I had recently retired from 40+ years as a pulmonary/critical care physician and disengaged from most things cerebral. Being generally a pretty driven guy I was looking around for my next activity of engagement. While absentmindedly pushing the cart I passed a pile of carving stones. I had a flash back to a visit to a friend’s home who was an accomplished painter/artist. He was carving a heart into a mountain of soapstone. I remember thinking that it was first a really cool piece and second that it was a whole new art form for him. Looking back, it was probably my “ah ha” moment. It was a long way from an epiphany, but still the moment when stone carving tweaked my interest. A few stones and a stone carving starter set later, the dust literally began to fly. I wouldn’t say it is an obsession but it has fully engaged my right brain, previously long neglected.

I am not able to predict where this project will take me but I do know that it brings me joy. There is satisfaction from taking a stone and making tangible an expression of an emotion or object to life. This, I think is what drives me to be a better conjurer of an imagined figure brought to life through a stone.
A final comment, to all those who thought I had rocks in my head…..you were right.
